Equine Osteopathy for Older Horses – Comfort & Mobility

As horses get older, natural changes in joint mobility, muscle condition, flexibility and movement can affect how comfortably they use their bodies. Years of ridden work, previous injuries and established movement patterns may also influence how an older horse moves and adapts as their physical capabilities begin to change.

Equine osteopathy can form part of an older horse's ongoing care, using a gentle, hands-on and whole-body approach to support mobility and comfortable movement. By assessing the joints, muscles, fascia and overall movement of the horse, I can identify areas of restriction, muscular or fascial tension and compensatory patterns that may be placing additional demands on other areas of the body.

Treatment is always adapted to the individual horse and their needs. Equine osteopathy for older horses may include gentle joint mobilisation, soft tissue and fascial techniques. With consideration given to the horse's age, activity level, previous injuries, current mobility, general health and any diagnosed conditions.

As a horse ages, their workload and physical capabilities may change. Regular equine osteopathic assessment provides an opportunity to monitor changes in joint mobility, muscle condition and movement over time, allowing treatment and management recommendations to be adapted accordingly.

This can be valuable for older horses at all levels of activity. Whether your horse is still competing, enjoying regular hacking, moving into lighter ridden work or fully retired, maintaining appropriate movement and mobility remains an important part of senior horse care.

The aim isn't to make an older horse's body function like a young one, but to support the mobility they have, reduce unnecessary muscular and fascial tension and encourage comfortable, functional movement, helping to maintain their quality of life as they age.

Where an older horse has a diagnosed condition, develops a new change in movement or is already under veterinary care, osteopathy should form part of a wider, multidisciplinary management plan alongside your vet and other relevant equine professionals.
